Innovative careers of five SFU researchers recognized by the Royal Society of Canada

From November 15-18, 2018, at the Celebration of Excellence and Engagement in Halifax, Nova Scotia, five Simon Fraser University researchers were awarded Canada’s highest academic honour, induction into the Royal Society of Canada.

The SFU community congratulates Deanna Reder and Hugo Cardoso on being named 2018 RSC College Members and to Fiona Brinkman, Jin-me Yoon, and Richard Lockhart on being named 2018 RSC Fellows.

This tremendous achievement is a source of pride for the university and highlights research excellence nationally.

 

Deanna Reder, professor, SFU’s Departments of First Nations Studies and English

Deanna Reder is a Cree Métis scholar and professor in SFU’s Faculties of First Nations Studies and English who is working towards recuperating the Indigenous archive.

SFU is producing award-winning, socially relevant research and scholarship.

 

Hugo Cardoso, professor, SFU’s Department of Archaeology

Specializing in the human juvenile skeleton, Hugo Cardoso’s research assists in the medical-legal investigation of child deaths.

SFU researchers embody the university’s spirit of innovative thinking to support positive change at home and abroad.

 

Fiona Brinkman, professor, SFU’s Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry

Fiona Brinkman is developing sustainable infectious disease control methods including better ways to track and control microbes more effectively, and is ensuring that children get appropriately vaccinated.

SFU’s outstanding research infrastructure supports researchers and trainees across the university.

 

Jin-me Yoon, professor, SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts

With lens-based practices in photography, video and installation, Jin-me Yoon’s desire is to contribute to immigrant and Indigenous conversations towards reconciliation.

Fellowship in the RSC is Canada’s highest academic honour.

 

Richard Lockhart, professor, SFU’s Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science

Richard Lockhart helps people design statistical procedures and evaluate how well those statistical procedures work.

SFU is academically rigorous and internationally renowned for scholarship and research excellence.
